Description
RIWAQ takes its name from the arcaded walkway that runs along the courtyard of a traditional house, and the backrest is exactly that: a row of slender pointed arches, each one steam-bent and lashed by hand from solid bamboo poles. Seen from behind — which matters, because a sofa this long often floats in the middle of a room — it reads as a screen rather than a back panel.
The frame sits low and wide on a doubled bamboo rail, which is what keeps a three-seat span from flexing. A single full-length seat cushion in deep crimson runs the whole width, and five ivory scatter cushions soften the line without hiding the joinery. It is a piece built for a majlis, a formal reception corner, or the long wall of an open-plan living room, and it holds its own next to darker wood and warm stone.
Every arch is set by eye, so no two sofas are millimetre-identical. That is the nature of handwork, and it is the point.
